Hi Viz and High Style!

I'm pretty excited about our 2014 Velo Girls club kit!  We've juiced up our colors to design a super high-visibility kit by Pactimo.  You can order on-line now through Monday, April 7th and all orders will be shipped directly to you by Pactimo for delivery in early May.

We're offering the Summit Pro Women's Short Sleeve Jersey, the Continental Women's Sleeveless Jersey, the Ascent Pro Women's Bib Shorts, the Ascent Women's Shorts, and the Evergreen Lightweight Wind Vest (unisex).

The Summit Pro jersey and Evergreen vest offer reflective piping for additional visibility.  And I can't say enough about the chamois in the Ascent bibs.  I've ridden these bibs on multiple Death Rides (124 miles with 15,000' of climbing) and on the 3-day 375-mile La Vuelta Puerto Rico and they are hands-down some of the most comfortable women's clothing I've ever worn.

All orders are custom made for YOU so make sure to refer to the sizing charts to order the correct size as there are no returns or exchanges.

Click on over to the Pactimo store and order your 2014 Velo Girls club kit today!

Can You See Me Now?

This just in! We've got an awesome design for our 2014 club jersey from Pactimo. New this year, we're offering an on-line store with Pactimo where you can order whatever you'd like and everything will be shipped directly to you.

The online store is open now and will remain open through
February 25th. Orders will be delivered at the end of March -- just in time for the Cinderella Classic on April 5th.

At this time, we're offering just three items: the Summit Pro Women's Short Sleeve Jersey, the Ascent Pro Women's Bib Shorts, and the Evergreen Wind Vest (unisex sizing, so order a size smaller than your jersey). If there's interest, we can add items to the store in the future, so if there's something you'd like to order (shorts, arm warmers, long sleeve or sleeveless jerseys), email Lorri@velogirls.com with your suggestion.

Evergreen Unisex Wind Vest

Ascent Pro Women's Bib Shorts

Summit Pro Women's Short Sleeve Jersey

For 2014, we've pumped up our logo colors to create a jersey that's highly visible (yet so much more fashionable than a neon yellow windbreaker). You'll find the purple is the same as past years, but the orange and green are "caffeinated" making them highly visible, especially in low light conditions. And how about those vertical stripes? Super-slimming and attractive on all body types!

In the Pactimo store, you can add on base layers, arm warmers, and knee warmers at a 15% discount so stock up on these must-have pieces for year-round riding.

You'll find our on-line Pactimo store here: http://order.pactimo.com/teams/velo_girls

My Christmas Confession

I’ve been lying to everyone and it’s time to make amends.  You see, when asked about Christmas, I always tell folks I “don’t do” Christmas.  And that’s true.  I don’t celebrate the holiday in a traditional way.  I don’t have family, so I don’t feel obligated to participate in any dreaded family get-togethers.  I haven’t purchased a single gift nor have I mailed even one card.  There are no candles in the window nor carols at the spinet.  And I’ve lived this way for close to two decades.

But the reality is, I really do love Christmas.  Besides the stress that surrounds the holiday, I have some lovely memories of big family dinners, Christmas Eve midnight mass, our annual Christmas choir concert featuring “O Holy Night,” and Christmas morning with all the grandchildren.  I used to decorate a tree each year and I still have a box of ornaments (in storage) that I collected in the first 30 years of my life.  I used to send out hundreds of Christmas cards.  I used to bake dozens of cookies for family, friends, and co-workers.  I even used to host a Christmas caroling party at my home.  So, what happened?  How did I become the girl who didn’t “do Christmas?”

The transition happened gradually, shortly before I moved to California in 1998.  My grandmother, who had been the anchor of many of our family traditions, passed away.  My father picked up the reins and we started some new traditions without her.  And then my father died.  And then I moved to California.  The first winter I lived here, I travelled home to upstate New York for the holiday.  It was just me, my mother, and my sister (who also used to live in CA).   My other sister had estranged herself from the family, and, as the mother of the only grandchildren in the family, she deprived us of sharing the experience with children.  So we went from a two-day celebration filled with tons of family and friends to a depressing week where my mother didn’t get out of bed, my sister drank 2 bottles of wine each night, and I started to hate the holiday that I had always loved.  Although my mother lived another five years after this, that was my last Christmas in New York.

The following year, I started riding a bicycle.  I hooked up with three other riders (all training for the California AIDS Ride) and we rode together for 4 days over the Christmas holiday.  We called ourselves the “Christmas Orphans.”  We each had a different story, but what we shared was the fact that we were alone for the holidays and that we all rode a bike.  On Christmas morning 1999, we rode a 30-mile route in San Francisco.  We continued to be friends and this ride became a holiday tradition.  Over the years, the other three moved on to other traditions, I continued on, and today marked the 15th Annual Christmas Orphans’ Tour of San Francisco.  In these 15 years, I’ve only missed twice:  once when we cancelled due to torrential rain and wind and once when I was recovering from surgery.

One year, there were only 2 of us on the ride (it was pouring rain).  One year, there were close to 100 riders (thanks to a calendar listing from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.  Everyone comes from a different place, many of them with connections to me, and they share the desire to participate in a fun, social ride on Christmas morning.  And, no matter what size the group, we bring smiles to the faces of all who see us, dressed in Santa hats, elf costumes, and riding decorated bikes.

Alyson + Lorri at the Golden Gate Bridge

The Christmas Orphans’ Tour of San Francisco is a unique ride.  It’s not a long ride, totaling just 29 miles.  It’s not a hard ride, with less than 1,500’ of climbing.  It’s not a fast ride, since we keep the group together (no matter how slow the slowest rider is) and we stop to enjoy the view, take photos, and maybe even have a cup of hot chocolate.  It’s a social ride where old friends and new friends get to see the city in a new way.  On Christmas morning, when everyone else is sitting around their Christmas tree, you can see the random art in the city – the murals and mosaics, the sculpture and the architecture, and, on a clear day like today, the amazing views of the bay, the bridges, and the ocean.

It’s been fascinating for me to see how our beautiful city has changed in the past 15 years.  The infrastructure for bicycles has improved dramatically.  The ballpark was built and has changed names a couple of times.  Parts of the city have been developed while other parts have become less desirable.  I’ve noticed more folks are out and about running, bicycling, surfing, and walking (and today’s beautiful weather definitely contributed to this).  And I still see the homeless, the needy, and the hopeful on street corners and hidden in the nooks and crannies of the city.

So, my reality is that I DO celebrate Christmas.  And I DO give gifts.  My gift is bringing together random strangers and friends to share in this amazing experience.  I give folks who might be alone the opportunity to spend time with others.  I give folks who don’t celebrate Christmas something to do on a day when many folks are busy with family.  I give myself the opportunity to continue a tradition that has been very meaningful for me.  And the other riders give me the opportunity to share this with them.

It’s amazing to me that I’ve continued this tradition for 15 years.  I don’t think I’ve ever done anything else in my entire life for 15 years.  But then again, I’ve never loved anything or anyone the way I love my bike.  And love is actually what traditions like Christmas are all about.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Midsummer Musings from Coach Lorri

Whoever created my schedule this summer was crazy!  What's that you say?  I put together my own schedule?  Well that explains everything.  Indeed, I'm crazy.

Since mid-June, I've spent more time away from home than at home.  My life has been a constant go-go-go.  And, of course, the bike has been an integral part of that action.

In June, I spent two weeks in beautiful Markleeville, CA, home of the Death Ride.  I held my 5th Annual Alpine Altitude Adventure camp with a great group of riders and also rode the Alta Alpina Challenge on one of the hottest days of the year.  I rode my favorite mountain passes, practiced yoga at studios in Carson City, Truckee, and South Lake Tahoe, visited the farmer's markets, hiked with my dog, and did some advance work for The Specialized Women Sports Camp where I'd be coaching in August.  I even went stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Tahoe for the 1st (and 2nd) time ever!

Lorri and Annie at the Death Ride

July was non-stop action, with another week in Markleeville, capped off by my fastest Death Ride ever!  I somehow slipped in a bunch of Savvy Bike clinics, bike fits, and on-the-bike coaching sessions, as well as prep for the 8th Annual Menlo Park Grand Prix presented by Kit Order.

The day after the race, I spent my 48th birthday with off-load and then hopped on the redeye for New York to spend an amazing week visiting long-lost family and friends and attending my 30th High School Reunion.  I rode my bike 6 days in 6 different places, including a group ride and a ride with a high school buddy.  I met with cycling and fitness friends to work on plans to bring coaching programs to NY next summer.  This was the first real vacation I've taken in a long time, and I even completely ignored work and email for a few days.

When I returned from NY, I had one day at home before heading up to Truckee to coach the road cycling programs at The Specialized Women Sports Camp.  What a fabulous weekend of clinics, riding, yoga, SUP, and seminars in a stunning setting.

Lorri and her athletes climb Donner Pass

And now I'm back and ready to settle in for a while, with awesome Bike Skills clinics, AIDS LifeCycle Training Ride Leader Certification clinics, bike fits, on-the-bike clients, and even some road and mountain bike racing to finish off the summer.  I've loved every minute of my crazy summer, but I'm thrilled to be back home in Northern CA -- the most perfect place on earth to ride a bike!

Life is short.  Live each day fully.  Enjoy summer.  Make memories!

How Can YOU Support Women's Cycling?

For the past 8 years, Velo Girls has promoted (bike racing lingo for putting on a race) the Menlo Park Grand Prix.  This is an awesome criterium on a very unique course and we pull out all the stops to make this a fun, family-oriented day of bike racing.  In addition to our competitive events, we have a super-fun expo, a FREE children's race, other fun kid's events, and even gourmet food trucks.  This year's race is July 28th and we're busy planning all the details of this year's event.

As one of the only all-women's cycling clubs in the United States to promote a bike race, we've made it our mission to use this race to promote women's bike racing.  With eleven races during the course of the day, we have FIVE women's races (while most other races only have one or two).  This year's edition of the Menlo Park Grand Prix is host to the Elite Women's State Championship, the Master Women's State Championship (with two races), and separate races for CAT 3 and CAT 4 women.  This is a HUGE investment for us since women's fields are smaller than men's fields and there is a pretty significant loss of income for the women's races.  But women's cycling is our mission so we're willing to take that risk and find other sources of income to underwrite this investment.

It takes a lot of resources for us to put on this race and we'd love to get YOU involved this year.  Here's how you can help:

#1 -- Register to Race:  We have 11 competitive events during the day, including Northern California Nevada Cycling Association BikeReg.com Premier Series races for P/1/2 (men), Masters 1/2/3 35+ (men), Masters 1/2/3 45+ (men), and Women 1/2/3.  We're also part of the NCNCA Women's Series with separate fields for the CAT3 and CAT 4 women.   You'll find registration here:  https://www.usacycling.org/register/2013-1977

#2 -- Become a Sponsor:  We're particularly interested in cash sponsorship, but donations of goods and services are also welcome (either to supplement race production or to be used as prizes).  We're utilizing social media this year to help raise funds and all donations are welcome and appreciated.  Check out our new "Friend of Menlo Park Grand Prix sponsorship level (and get a super-sexy race t-shirt).  http://www.gofundme.com/8thmenloparkgrandprix

#3 -- Volunteer on Race Day:  It takes more than 70 volunteers and staff to put on a race of this caliber.  We've got volunteer positions for course marshalls, registration staff, and even podium girls!  Email Lorri@velogirls.com for details.

Our list of event sponsors is growing daily, but special thanks go to KitOrder.com for stepping up as presenting sponsor this year.

We'd also like to thank Cycles Fanatic, Davis Junior Race Team, High Note Coffee, Ink Monkey Graphics, Pactimo, Rock Tape, and Savvy Bike.

Just Added: Dirty Velo Girls BEGINNER Mountain Bike Rides

Hey ladies!  If you're new to mountain biking, we've got the PERFECT ride for you.  Starting in June, we've added a series of beginner mountain bike rides at Coyote Hills in Fremont.  These rides are designed to help you get out on the trail and prepare join us on our weekly Dirty Velo Girls rides at Arastradero later in the season.

Dirty Velo Girls!

This ride series is designed for ladies who are brand-new to mountain biking! Hosted by members of Team Velo Girls, we will go over some basic mountain biking skills and practice riding the trails of Coyote Hills. Located in Fremont, near the Dumbarton Bridge, Coyote Hills Park has mostly flat trails with a few options for practicing climbing and descending. It is a perfect spot for beginners. While this series is designed for those new to mountain biking, you should have prior experience riding a bike.

Mountain bikes are best for this ride, but hybrids and cyclocross bikes will work fine, as well. Bring: water, snack, sunscreen, a helmet and a bike in working condition. Hope to see you out there!

Our Dirty Velo Girls Beginner Mountain Bike ride dates are June 8th, July 20th, and August 17th.

You'll find details and RSVP on our meetup:  http://www.meetup.com/velogirls

Prettier in Pink

Each year our Velo Girls club jersey designs just get prettier and prettier.  For 2013, we commissioned Team Velo Girls member (and graphic artist) Lindsay Platoshyn to design a fun and funky kit.  Orders have been pouring in via our Velo Girls membership registration page but we've got a limited, one-week ordering window directly with Pactimo for those of you who didn't order with your membership.

Please note, all orders will be delivered mid-March (in plenty of time for the Cinderella Classic).

At this time, we're offering three items through our Pactimo store -- short sleeve jersey, sleeveless jersey, and wind vest.

You can also place an order for cycling shorts, cycling bib shorts, or long sleeve jerseys with your club membership.  At this time, we don't have enough pre-order on these three items to add them to the Pactimo store but if we reach minimums, the order will also go in for delivery before Cinderella.  If you've already purchased your 2013 membership, you can still click over to the membership site and order (just click the "clothing only" option).

And if I've completely confused you, just shoot me an email with the items you're interested in ordering and I'll help you out -- Lorri@velogirls.com

Rainy Days and Saturdays Always get me Up!

Winter rains are here.  It's pretty cold, too.  It actually feels a bit like snow.  Rain gear and fenders are great, but sometimes I don't feel like the post-ride clean-up so I'll just ride my CompuTrainer or the rollers instead.

after two days of torrential rain riding in SLO

So, what else do I do when it rains?  I work on the calendar!  I'm thrilled to say that we've got 2013 calendared out through November.  Yeah, I'm crazy like that.

It should be an exciting year for Velo Girls and we want YOU to come out and ride with us.

On the mountain bike side, we've been brainstorming for a while with Team Velo Girls members to come up with a new, enhanced schedule that will embrace the beginner and challenge the more advanced rider.  I think you'll like what we've done.  We're introducing a monthly First-Timers Mountain Bike Ride at Coyote Hills.  While we like to think that our weekly Dirty Velo Girls ride at Arastradero OSP is a beginner ride, it's really not.  So our hope is that beginners will come out to join us at Coyote Hills, realize we're a really fun group of chicks who are encouraging to beginners, and then join in on our other rides.  At the other end of the spectrum, we've been ignoring our more advanced riders who want a challenge beyond Arastradero, so we're going to rotate our weekly ride between different locations (Arastradero, Fremont Older, Waterdog, and somewhere else special) to reach a variety of fitness and skill levels, as well as geographic locations.

On the road side, we're bringing back some favorites and adding some new rides, too!  Team Velo Girls members will lead three progressive training ride series this year, focusing on the Cinderella Classic (January - April), a Hill Climbing series (May + June), and then a series that will lead up to a fall century in October.  We're moving our always-popular Midweek Madness Co-ed Group Ride at Mike's Bikes in Palo Alto to Thursday evenings.  And we'll continue to offer weekly Melo Velo beginner road rides in Woodside and monthly Melo Velo beginner road rides in Orinda.  We're also working on a plan to offer a Medio Velo option that will feature a mid-distance endurance ride year-round.

We've moved our calendar functions over to Meetup, which has proven to be a great marketing tool and also a really efficient way for us to keep track of RSVPs.  So join up our meetup and then come out and ride with us in the coming year!

So, what did you do on this rainy Saturday?

30 Days of Biking Day #8

Today I led the Melo Velo.  It's a weekly beginner-friendly club ride just for women.  This ride has been one of our most popular rides since we started it in 2004.  It began as an extension of our regular Sunday club ride back in 2002 but we eventually moved to a new location (twice) and launched it as a stand-alone ride.  Thousands of women have participated in this ride over the years and for many, it's their first introduction to road cycling and group riding.  The ride is led by members of Team Velo Girls and other experienced club riders.

Today's group was awesome!  9 women joined me for our 15-mile ride on Canada Road, including Dorothy R., celebrating her birthday (which I commemorated with a tiara on her helmet).  For a number of women, this was the longest ride they'd ever done.  Everyone did GREAT and had fun.  We stopped at the Pulgas Water Temple for a little local history lesson and a photo opportunity.

I felt great today and was tempted to go longer, but reminded myself that I've still got 22 days of consecutive riding to do and tomorrow's ride of the Sea Otter Classic cross-country course will be challenging.  So instead of adding on miles, I joined some of the girls for coffee and girl-talk at the Woodside Bakery.

http://www.plus3network.com/activity/Melo-Velo/1751521

It's been a good week (+1).  8 days, 8 rides:  5 road, 2 dirt, 1 rollers.  3 of those were Velo Girls club rides.  Add in my daily walks with the dog and 2 YIN yoga sessions and I feel great.  15.5  hours in the saddle, 162 miles.

30 Days of Biking Day #4

I really do LOVE this sport.  I love just about everything about it.  I love the diversity.  It's really more like a bunch of different sports all rolled into one.  Road, dirt, track, mixed terrain.  Fast, slow, moderate, intervals.  Short, long, commute, multi-day, tricks.  And that's just the riding!

I also love the diversity of the people who ride bikes.  Tonight was our first Midweek Madness of the 2012 season.  This is the longest-running Velo Girls ride on the calendar.  We started this ride in the summer of 2002, and from that group of women developed our first racing team.  We've used this ride as race training, group ride training, hill climbing, and skills training.  Last year, we mixed it up.  We moved the ride to Mike's Bikes of Palo Alto and made it a co-ed ride.  It was a great way for us to provide a service to our fabulous sponsor (Mike's Bikes).  And the central location (mid-peninsula and less than a mile from CalTrain) seemed to be really popular.  The pace last year was pretty fast and we focused on group riding with lots of coaching for the participants on how to handle their own bike and how to interact as a group.  The route is just long enough to give everyone a good workout (20 miles).  This year, we've got two ride leaders and will be able to accommodate two pace groups, which is a great way to get more newbies oriented to group riding while still keeping the pace fast for our faster riders.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel tonight.  After three days on the bike (after a three-week break) and continued caloric deficit, I was a bit concerned that my legs would feel fatigued.  But yesterday's mountain bike ride was good recovery and I had good legs tonight.  The group was very diverse (racers, ALC riders, ADA riders, and Velo Girls members).  And the ride was FUN!  We kept a solid pace and were able to pretty much accommodate everyone's needs.  I alternated between leading and sweeping back with the slower riders and got a few good hard efforts in between the two groups.  It was chilly and windy but we kept the group moving so it wasn't unpleasant.

http://www.plus3network.com/activity/Midweek-Madness/1742543

After a number of years fundraising for Trips for Kids, I switched my beneficiary on Plus 3 Network to the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).  It's kind of a bummer because I lose the first 3 days' kudos on the NICA leaders' board, but all good.  I'll just have to work harder to get back to the top.

My plan is to go long on the mountain bike tomorrow.  I'm going to ride with the Dirty Velo Girls and plan to do a full loop before the group ride.  I need to build the endurance on the dirt.

Happy 10th Birthday Velo Girls!

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the very-first Velo Girls ride.  Technically, it was the second ride on our schedule (the first getting rained out on March 10th).  When I launched Velo Girls in 2002, there was no Facebook, no Meetup, and no other sites designed to bring groups of like-minded individuals (in this case women cyclists in northern California) together.  Instead, I built a website, planned a very conservative calendar (2 rides a month) and flooded Craig's List and various newsgroups with the news of this brand new cycling club for women.  Our tagline in 2002 was "Fitness, Friendship, and Fun!"  To my amazement, 46 women showed up for that very-first ride.  The rest is history.

In honor of our birthday, I'm sharing some images of the original "girls in pink."  Which of these do you own?  Do you still wear it?  Which is your favorite?

Happy 10th Birthday to Velo Girls!  May we continue to ride + celebrate 20 years of women's cycling in 2022.
